Breath Made Visible: Movement Links

Last night I saw Saxophonist/Composer Lea Bertucci perform; beyond her wonderful sounds, she also had a sheet of mylar attached to herself that spread light reflections against the surrounding surfaces; her movements had a visible as well as sonic impact in the space. This seems like a good time to post a link to showing that, and some other movement links of interest as well.

CAMILO GODOY LECTURE DEMONSTRATION: A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE DESTRUCTION

This performance, upcoming on February 16th, potentially intersects with our Diana Taylor reading on Latin America.  “As part of AC Institute’s Performance Series, Camilo Godoy presents Lecture Demonstration: A Short Account of the Destruction. This performance brings together the artist’s research on writings by Europeans describing the dance and sexual practices of non-European people in the colonial period.”

My friend went to a workshop led by Shaun Leonardo and recommended his work. “Shaun Leonardo uses his body to communicate and portray imagery, in this case, hyper-masculine images of physicality – at the expense of his own physical comfort. The function of the male body has long been a signifier of self-worth. The body affirms and legitimizes his feeling of control and agency over his environment. In this sense Shaun “El C.” Leonardo is performing two very distinct actions at once. On the one hand, he uses performance as a venue for discussion of how men have internalized culture’s preconceived notions of how men should act and appear. And on the other hand, his performances call attention to how these expectations are not only strange, but also not applicable to the rest of men at large. ”

IV. Lawrence and Anna Halprin (Landscape Architect and Dancer)

I was introduced to the work of the Halprins through a presentation by former dancer studying for her Master’s in Interior Design at Parsons. I haven’t been able to delve completely into these, but I was intrigued by her mention of the difference of drafting a space versus exploring the space with the body. By a nice coincidence, a movie about Anna’s life and work is called Breath made Visible.
